The Deck Project Begin!Matthew digs the holes
for the posts while Dave prepares the first band. -
The First JoistDave attaches the first joist
while Steve supports it and Matthew and I help out.
This joist is doubled because it will support
the rainwater system. It was heavy! -
The First Post Goes Up!Dave and I hold the first post
while Steve attaches the joist at the top.
We're using 6x6 posts because the deck needs
to support the rainwater system....water is heavy! -
The First JoistSteve attaches the first joist
to the post....this was not an easy job! -
Marking for the Second BandDave and Andrew mark the location
for the second band. This will hold the shed roof.
We will add a roof under the deck....we'll have an
outdoor work and storage area so the roof
will keep all our stuff protected and dry. -
The Deck Progresses....Steve teeters on the ladder as he adds
the cross support to the second post. -
Making it SquareAndrew uses a framing square
to make sure the deck is square. This is very important! -
Making it SturdyWhile Andrew uses the framing square to make
the deck square, Matthew holds the post in place
and secures Steve's ladder while
Steve adds the end cap. Team work at its finest! -
The End of Day #1Check it out!
The initial framing for the deck is done!
On day #2, we'll add the shed roof and the
joists....or at least that's the plan.... -
Adding RaftersKevin screws one of the rafters
to the band that's bolted to the building. -
Adding RaftersPaul adds another rafter.
These will support the shed/workshop roof
under the deck. -
And the roof goes on....Kevin, Paul, and Steve begin
installing the metal shed roof. -
The Last PostThe deck will support our
rainwater catchment system so it needs to be really sturdy.
We added another 6x6 post on the corner
where the deck meets the building. -
Placing the PostKevin directs the top of the post
while Steve, Dave, and Paul place the bottom. -

Leveling the PostDave uses a level to
check the post. It needs to be straight
to properly support the deck. -
Cutting Deck JoistsPaul and I measure the boards
to be cut and used as deck joists. -
Passing up the JoistsPaul gives Kevin one of the joists
while I pass up screws and other materials.
It's so helpful to have the roof to stand on! -
Adding JoistsKevin and Dave install the
deck joists. We used hangers on the
building side to make them extra sturdy. -

Finishing the JoistsChristina and Dave add the
final joists. We're amost ready for the decking! -
Day #2 Is Done!Check it out!
The shed/workshop has a roof and
and we're ready for decking!

Day #3 Begins....The goal for Day #3
is to add the decking.
Matthew, Andrew, and Cindy begin
by adding flashing to keep
the water away from the building. -
Adding DeckingMatthew secures the boards.
We got Trex decking from a local builder
that was left over from various jobs.
It's all different colors
so it won't work for most folks,
but it works great for us!

it was quite a day, and now
we have a deck! -

Measuring for the RailingsCrystal measures the distance
between the posts for the railings. -

The Railings Progress!Angela holds the pickets
while dad screws them into place.
Teamwork! -
Keeping them StraightAngela uses a level to insure that
the pickets are straight.
This is very important
to keeping the railings sturdy.
