Green Building Adventure | Phase I

James Heffner donated his
barn to the Green Building Adventure.
David Akoubian photographed the barn
before we deconstructed it.

Mr. Heffner's father used the barn
as his tinkering shop.
It was full of treasures!

David Akoubian photographed the
Heffner barn to help preserve
this unique piece of history.

The barn was first used to
house mules. The Heffners farmed with mules
before buying their first tractor.

In later years, the barn was
used as a small engine repair shop.
It was full of machine parts.

Mr. Heffner had jars full
of nuts, washers, and other small
machine parts. He was ready for anything!

Things were tucked into
every nook and cranny.

Mr. Heffner's barn
was full of goodies. Much of it will be
reused in the Green Building Adventure.

This was Mr. Heffner's workbench.
He was ready to tinker with any engine that
came into his shop.

This photo shows Mr. Heffner's
collection - tool handles in the rafters,
every size washer imaginable in stacks on the walls,
and lots of misc. tools for every need.

The deconstruction process begins.
Russell starts by dismantleing the roof.

Our crew begins deconstructing
the barn. Thanks to Seth, Christina, Scott,

Jack, Andy, and Oren.

at a stubborn wall.

Here you can see that most of the walls are gone.
What a terrific crew!

At this point, the barn was
barely standing. To avoid the risk of it
falling on one of us, we
used a truck to pull it down at the end.

And down it comes!
Nobody thought we could get
the barn down in one day.
Teamwork!

And it's down!
Great job team!

There's still lots of clean-up.

There's a little more to deconstruct
and clean up.

Before deconstructing the barn,
we moved everything out. Jill helps
sort the piles. Some is recycled,
lots gets relocated to the Green Building Adventure
site, and a few items are disposed of.

the last of the barn.
What a project!

The Heffner's barn has been
successfully deconstructed.
Here are the sorted, organized piles
of reusable building materials.
We will recycle as much of the
barn as possible into the
Green Building Adventure.
